Mindfulness

Your thoughts shape your reality. How are you viewing the world?

Mindfulness is experiencing life with a consciousness about how you want to view the world. I believe that mindfulness is tied to positive mindsets, or outlooks, and deliberate choices, backed by a desire to experience a meaningful life, in harmony with the world around you. And I believe that the bible teaches use to do this too!

A researcher and doctor, Dr. Zinn Kabat, coined the term, Mindfulness and assigned 9 Attitudes of Mindfulness. Taken from a quick Wikipedia search, “He teaches mindfulness, which he says can help people cope with stress, anxiety, pain, and illness. The stress reduction program created by Kabat-Zinn, mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR), is offered by medical centers, hospitals, and health maintenance organizations.” So this man has really helped a lot of people -and is continuing to do so.

I was first introduced to the 9 Attitudes of Mindfulness during my yoga teacher training. While this idea of Mindfulness is not rooted in another religion, the way it is presented is clearly influenced by another culture. I found so much wisdom in reading through these 9 Attitudes of Mindfulness that I wanted to back up what they said with biblical examples. As I learned about these I often thought how much more meaningful the information would be to me if presented through the lens of Christ. Since the bible is our best guide or moral compass on how to live our lives, I sought to find that connection. So one of my goals with Seeking Selah Yoga is to find these connections to share with you.

So let’s lay out the 9 Attitudes

  1. Beginner’s Mindset (Blog post available here: www.seekingselahyoga.com/blog/beginners-mindset-mindfulness)

  2. Non-Judging (Blog post available here: www.seekingselahyoga.com/blog/non-judging-mindset-mindfulness)

  3. Acceptance

  4. Letting Go

  5. Trust

  6. Patience

  7. Non-Striving

  8. Gratitude

  9. Generosity

I’ll get into each of these in depth in future blog posts with accompanied yoga classes! For now, feel free to share any thoughts you have on this in the comments section below!
