A How-To Meditate Guide

So are you ready to give meditation a try? Are you ready to rejuvenate your mind and spirit? Well here is a guide to get you started. It is based off of a book titled, Christian Meditation, Experiencing the Presence of God, a Guide to Contemplation, by James Finley.

This is accompanied by a YouTube video you can find here: https://youtu.be/x_rnawR9qjE

1.   Where?

a.   You can meditate anywhere though finding a comfortable place, that is the same place each time you meditate, may be helpful (a corner of your living room, bedroom, etc.)

b.   James Finley says, “The point is that your place of meditation practice will tend to have a certain quiet order about it, expressive or sincerity and faith. Just seeing the place set aside for meditation will suggest to you that something important happens there”.

2.   For how long?

a.   Use a timer so you don’t have to worry about how long you’ll be sitting there. Perhaps start with 5-10 minutes. In reality, there is no set end time for meditation.

3.   Do I need anything?

a.   While nothing is necessary you may find having a significant picture, your bible, devotional, candles, etc. to be useful.

4.   What do I do?

a.   Begin with prayer or reading several verses of scripture.

b.   Be compassionate with yourself if your mind wanders. This is normal. You can refocus on your breath (naming your inhales and your exhales). Or jump back in where you left off.

c.    Be “aware of each thought as it arises endures and passes away."
